The Queen Aretha Franklin took the stage of Radio City Hall tonight to deliver the soul she is so known for. However, tonight had a slightly more important urgency to her performance. She was giving her all for her honorary niece, Whitney Houston. Whitney's funeral is tomorrow and Aretha will be singing at the church service. With Clive Davis and L.A. Reid in the audience, Whitney Houston's presence was felt and her life was celebrated in songs all night. There was a stirring moment in particular when Aretha performed, "I Will Always Love You" in honor of Houston.
Total rock n' roll!!! Check out the great review from Aaron Stein at the Bowery Presents Houselist here. Thanks to the Bowery Presents for putting on this show!
Imagine for a moment, a pristine sunset with picture perfect weather to kick off the summer concert season in NYC. Now imagine your feet in the sand, taking in great music with lower Manhattan as the backdrop - together with Michael Franti & Spearhead and Trombone Shorty shakin' your groove thang. They kicked off the Bowery Presents concert series at the beach on Governors Island. We strongly recommend taking your loved one or friends for a night on the town - it's only a 2 minute water taxi ride from lower Manhattan. Check out these photos - they tell it all...
Funk-Soul-Groove-Jazz Masters, Soulive kicked off a historic 10 night run at Brooklyn Bowl last night. The Bowery Presents promised special guests each night, last night featured Vernon Reid on guitar from Living Colour and Nigel Hall from Lettuce. Charlie Hunter, Warren Haynes, Q-Tip, and many more will be sitting in with Soulive over the next 2 weeks. You definitely want to visit the incredible Brooklyn Bowl music club.
Sometimes you are just in the right spot at the right time - and that's exactly what happened to me last night at Madison Square Garden. I was shooting the band for the Bowery Presents (the promoter) and near the end of the last song we could shoot, I slipped into the front of the catwalk and nailed these killer shots.
When I was asked to photograph the US Air Guitar Championships in New York City - I was like, "Are You Serious?" Is that really real? Not only is it real - but it's got a HUGE following. People were pumped up for this event and they showed it. You just HAVE to see these photos - they are hilarious! Saturday Night Live comedian Jason Sudeikis was a judge together with last year's Air Guitar winner, "Hot Licks" Houlihan. It was so classic you wouldn't believe it.
Last night at Terminal 5 in NYC, Thievery Corporation laid down the beats with a world, reggae, hip-hop fusion of sound that was phenomenal. Definitely pick up a copy of Radio Retaliation - one of the best CD's of 2008. This montage captures it all:
